The GP is the front door

For most families, the GP is where healthcare starts. It’s the first call for a sick child, a script renewal, a referral or a check-up. In Australia, general practice is the gateway to most of the health system, and patients come back to the same practice again and again over the years.

That makes the GP the natural centre of a neighbourhood health precinct. Get it right, and everything around it has a reason to be there.

Referrals that stay close

A GP visit often leads somewhere else: a blood test, a physio appointment, a script to fill. When pathology, allied health and a pharmacy are a short walk away, that next step happens in the same trip. Patients find it easier to follow through, and the practices around the GP become part of the care, not an afterthought.

It sets the rhythm of the precinct

A busy general practice brings people through the doors from early morning, every weekday. That steady, all-day flow is what an allied health practice, a pharmacy or a café needs to do well. It’s a very different pattern from the lunchtime peaks of a typical shopping strip.

How it shapes our planning

Securing the GP as the anchor lets us plan everything else around it. We size the pathology and allied health suites to work with the practice, place the pharmacy where a script is filled on the way out, and add early learning and a café so a family’s errands happen in one stop.

The design follows the same order. Consulting suites are planned with the clinical fitout in mind, parking is at grade and close to the entrance, and the trip from the car to the waiting room is planned to be easy with a pram, a walker or a wheelchair.

What it means for practitioners

If you run an allied health or specialist practice, a GP in the same building means referrals close at hand and a shared patient base. If you run a pharmacy or a café, it means steady weekday foot traffic. And for the community, it means care close to home.

At LiveWell Burpengary, the GP and on-site pathology are committed, with doors opening mid 2027. At LiveWell Flagstone, a GP and pathology practice is committed as the anchor.
